For chairs
The board you chair, not the board you carry
SGAF is the Governance Operating System for UK schools and academy trusts. As chair, that means one annual assurance plan the whole board shares rather than one you carry in your own head, every audit finding landing as a risk with a named owner, and an annual statement the board signs together, not one person drafts alone.
Membership from £229 per school per year.
Your term with SGAF
A chair's year, mapped out
Three points in the year where the chair's job changes, from setting the plan to signing the board's account.
Autumn
The year's plan, agreed once
The Governor Assurance Plan draws on your school's own improvement priorities, every statutory monitoring role and, where it applies, the faith strand, so the whole board works from one plan instead of three separate systems. Every priority carries a named governor and a term, agreed at the start of the year rather than assembled meeting by meeting.
Through the year
Findings become risks, not a list only you carry
Every audit finding can be weighed as a risk, given an owner and a review date on the Risk Register, so the board's principal risks surface on their own rather than living in the chair's head. Delegated checks are chased by reminders, not by you, and each one carries a single clear approval step before it counts as done.
Summer
An account the board signs together
The annual Governance Statement draws on the year's Quality Standard progress, live risks and tracked actions, so the factual sections are already written by the time the board turns to it. The board adds its own honest reflection, then records its adoption with a minute reference. Nothing publishes until that vote.
